Mariner’ Compass 8’x8’ Barn Quilt from American Garden Barn Quilts.
While Mariner’s Compass when completed is a full size 8ft by 8ft Barn Quilt, it is actually two 4x8 separate halves. Mariner’s Compass was my first design and layout of an 8x8 Barn Quilt. When I began the layout work, I had to decide if it would be easier to create the layout as one big 8ft Barn Quilt or lay the two halves separate. The are several design elements the required symmetry of the layout. The four main Blue and Yellow points of the Compass need to align to N, E, S and W to make the Compass Cardinal directions. Then the Maroon and Gray that make up the Ordinal directions need to align to the required angles. Additionally, the Yellow outer ring needed to be circular and symmetrical with the Compass points. To make sure I had the correct layout to meet the symmetrical balance that the Mariner’s Compass Barn Quilt requires, I choose to complete my layout work as a full 8x8 Barn Quilt. This also had it challenges as reaching the middle and drawing on such a large pallet was difficult. ( I don't have 4ft arms!)
For the colors of Mariner’s Compass, I chose what is becoming more of my signature light blue background as it represents a light blue clear sky. For the Compass points I wanted the color differential for the 3D effect while keeping the Cardinal Points and Ordinal Points in somewhat contrasting colors.
You can see from the picture above the result is a clean lined and simple - yet elegant Barn Quilt. I was very pleased with the final results of the alignment between the two different 4x8 sheets of MDO Board, you have to look very close to notice that this very large work of American Garden Barn Quilt Art - has a seam right down the middle of the Barn Quilt.
Like all my American Garden Barn Quilts, Mariner’s Compass is sealed on all edges with multiple coats of primer, high quality exterior paint and a water-based sealer to make this very nautical Barn Quilt weather resistant.
